Chapter Twelve

Slowly and reluctantly, Georgiana opened her eyes. Streaks of sunlight penetrated the sheer window coverings, the sort of weak winter light that brought no warmth. She had asked Mary to leave the heavy drapes open last night so she could stargaze while she brushed her hair. The sky had proved too overcast for stargazing, and she had forgotten to close the drapes before she went to bed.

She sat up and rubbed her knuckles into her dreamy eyes. Mary was ready for her with heated wash water and curling tongs. Today was the Sabbath and the family planned to attend the early church services.

Dressed in a simple but pretty gown, Georgiana picked up her prayer book and met her brother and Elizabeth in the breakfast room.

“Good morning,” she said in a tone much more energetic than she felt.

“You are up early this morning,” Darcy said, spreading his toast with preserves.

“It’s not that early.” Georgiana laid her prayer book on the table then went to the sideboard to prepare a plate.

“It is early compared to the hours you’ve kept lately.”

“One can hardly judge based on that.” Taking her seat, she picked up her napkin and shook it out. “I plan to put the last fortnight behind me.”

“I think that is an excellent idea. I see you brought your prayer book down. I am glad. I wasn’t sure if you would want to attend church with us today.”

“Why wouldn’t I?” Georgiana asked. “My presentation to the patronesses at Almack’s was a great success and we have at last overcome the awful lies that were bandied about London.”

“The rumours have not entirely gone away,” her brother corrected her, “but I agree they have been sufficiently suppressed so as to not cause any lasting damage.”
